Mastering B1 Italian means knowing exactly when to use the Congiuntivo versus the Indicativo, as well as the Infinitive rule for identical subjects.

1. Certainty (Indicativo) vs. Opinion/Doubt (Congiuntivo)

• So / È certo / È vero che... + Indicativo: So che Marco viene a cena. (Fact)
• Penso / Credo / Dubito / Spero che... + Congiuntivo: Penso che Marco venga a cena. (Opinion)

2. Same Subject Rule (Di + Infinito)

If the subject of the main clause and the subordinate clause are the same, do NOT use "che + Congiuntivo"! Use "di + Infinito" instead.

• Different subjects: Io spero che tu sia felice. (Io + Tu → Congiuntivo)
• Same subject: Io spero di essere felice. (NOT: Io spero che io sia...)
