Marco:Giulia, stavo riflettendo sulle nostre scelte universitarie. Se dieci anni fa avessi studiato medicina, oggi sarei un medico in corsia!(Giulia, I was reflecting on our university choices. If I had studied medicine ten years ago, today I would be a doctor on ward duty!)
Giulia:È vero, Marco! Col senno di poi è facile fare ipotesi. Se io non fossi andata a Bologna per studiare giurisprudenza, adesso non lavorerei in questo studio legale.(That is true, Marco! With hindsight it is easy to make hypotheses. If I had not gone to Bologna to study law, right now I would not be working in this law firm.)
Marco:Hai qualche rimpianto per aver intrapreso quella traiettoria professionale?(Do you have any regret for having embarked upon that professional path?)
Giulia:Nessun rimpianto reale. Anche se, ad essere sincera, se fossi più propensa al rischio, l'anno scorso avrei aperto uno studio tutto mio.(No real regret. Although, to be honest, if I were more prone to risk, last year I would have opened a firm all of my own.)
Marco:Capisco perfettamente. Se tu fossi stata più spregiudicata all'epoca, oggi forse saresti il capo di te stessa.(I understand completely. If you had been more daring back then, today perhaps you would be your own boss.)
Giulia:Esatto! E tu invece? Se non avessi trascurato il violino durante gli studi, oggi suoneresti in un'orchestra?(Exactly! And what about you? If you had not neglected the violin during your studies, today would you play in an orchestra?)
Marco:Probabilmente sì. Ma se fossi diventato musicista, non avrei mai incontrato la mia compagna a quel convegno scientifico.(Probably yes. But if I had become a musician, I would never have met my partner at that scientific conference.)
Giulia:Vedi? Ogni bivio porta a una meta inaspettata. Se fossimo rimasti fermi nel dubbio, oggi non saremmo così sereni.(You see? Every crossroads leads to an unexpected destination. If we had remained paralyzed by doubt, today we would not be so serene.)
